Fertilization Programs
The decision making with respect to fertilizer application to irrigated
lands, is far from being simple. Sound fertilization programs in arid and
semi-arid regions should satisfy plant needs and minimize the adverse effects
on the environment. The adverse effects of fertilizer applications are
attributed to their intense and unbalanced applications which lead to a loss of
soil fertility and continuous drain of nutrients that can neither complete
their cycles nor be replaced all together by the farmers.
The difficulty of adopting a sound, efficient and economical program
is related to the following;

One has to select a
nutrient source out of a vast collection.

Price inflammation has
exceeded the margins.

The fate of each form
of nutrient is not well considered; i.e. Urea, Nitrates, Ammonia and Amides.

The same is true for
phosphate compounds. Moreover,
most of the digital products (such as 19-19-19 and 12-4-43) neglect the
specification of N form and neglect heavy metals contamination.

The
form of a N-fertilizer is much more effective on fertilizer efficiency than
that of the application dose. Urea proved to be much more efficient than
ammonium sulphate under the conditions of saline water irrigation.

The interaction of
heavy metals that reach the soil, as fertilizers contaminants, can be damaging.
In a case study, Ni-toxicity in soil occurs around a concentration of
100 ppm but when Ni interacts with Cu + Zn it becomes much more toxic; its
toxicity level dropped to around 15 ppm.

Mixing ammonium with
potassium greatly decreases the efficiency of each other due to their
competition on adsorption and translocation sites.

Fertilizer application to forage crops might affect Pb/Zn ratio in the produced
milk and consequently affect the health of children.
In Egypt, the National Research Centre formulated
sulphur fertilizer mixtures, free from chemicals, which proved to be a good
substitute for the very fertile Nile sediments. Now the GizaTec is producing
the most advanced sulphur fertilizer mixture on a commercial scale, under the
